Steinbeck

John Steinbeck wrote The Winter of Our Discontent.

Ethan Hawley lives on Long Island with his wife, Mary, and his two kids, Allen and Ellen. Through most of the book, Ethan is depressed and stressed over life. Margie Young-Hunt won't leave him alone and tries to get him to cheat on his wife. His wife and kids put a lot of stress on him due to the lack of money in the house hold, which gives him an awkward relationship with them. Ethan tries to be "someone" in his town like his family used to be. The Hawley family used to be wealthy and powerful, something Ethan did not get.

He works at a grocery store that he used to own. Now the store is being run by an Italian Immigrant, who Ethan later finds out is an illegal alien. Ethan turns him into the Immigration and Naturalization Service and receives his store back.

Ethan's childhood best friend is the town drunk now. Ethan gives him a dollar every now and then just to show that he cares about him. Finally, he gives Danny enough to get severely drunk, and he dies. Before Danny died though, Ethan and Danny had an agreement, and Ethan inherited a large piece of land that belonged to him. This inheritance finally makes Ethan someone special in the town, but he is still not happy.

He contemplates suicide a few times but decides against it. Even though he knows that his family will never want again, he is still not satisfied with his life.

In this book, Steinbeck uses Ethan as an example of the rest of the world in those days. There were many problems back then, as there is today. Steinbeck wrote about how life seems like there is no point in continuing on, but then he finds hope. Depression was a common feeling back then due to conflicts in the world and it seemed as if there was no reason to live. Finally, something shown him hope.
